The Philippines end their AVC Under-23
Women’s Volleyball Championship campaign at seventh place after defeating Iran
in 3 straight, 25-15, 25-21, 26-24 on Saturday at the Philsport Arena.
Team Captain Alyssa Valdez finished
with 21 points while Jaja Santiago added 17 points including a match point with
back-to-back quick attacks.
Philippines survive in a tense moments
in the third set when Iran moved up by 22-25.
After a service error from Iran and
Valdez’s block attack, Philippines tied the match at 24.
“Before the start of the game, I told
my players na we want to end this competition by winning our last game.” said coach
Roger Gorayeb. “It’s for the fans and for the people of the Philippines.” he added.
“We’re really happy that we won the
game,” said Valdez. “We should focus and enjoy the game. It’s great for
volleyball in the Philippines.”
Iran fought in the third set using a
10-3 run to reach the match point at 24-22, but the Philippines force to end
the game in third set.
Neda Chamlanian scored 10 points for Iran to finished eighth place in the tournament.
